Die Zeiten sind hart. Sehnsuchtsorte werden imaginiert: Mal wieder die 80er. Doch wo sind die Gegenentwürfe? fragt sich unser Kolumnist

Popkultur wird ja immer nachgesagt, in Zyklen zu verlaufen. Nun sind zum wiederholten Mal die geliebten Eighties an der Reihe: Die Neue Neue Deutsche Welle macht sich im aktuellen Mainstream breit, Serien feiern die bekannten Hits, bebildert mit stilisierten Hochglanzfiltern – doch am Ende sind es wieder nur modische Itpieces von H&M. Dabei war gerade der Umbruch zwischen 70ern und 80ern prägend für alle die, die das Experiment, die große Geste und die Weirdness im Pop suchten.

Und genau dieser Übergangsphase widmet sich Glamour and Gloom mit seinem neuen Album Pat. Inspiriert von den Großen: Man fühlt sich an Bowie, Einstürzende Neubauten, aber auch The Doors erinnert. Wie diese es bereits taten, wird hier auf der Tiefe des historischen Raums gebaut, auf Blues und Chanson etwa. Die Songs wandeln, erzählen Geschichten, von damals, von heute. Niemals ewig gestrig, doch das Gestrige nie vergessend, schwelgt Pat immer auf festem Boden.

Glamour and Gloom kreiert all diese Stimmungen und Schwankungen auf einer Heimorgel. Der vernoiste Wavesound, den er dem altmodischen Instrument abverlangt, wirkt dabei niemals der jetzigen Zeit fern, gar nostalgisch. Seine tiefe Stimme trägt uns in eine neue, ferne Welt, die unserer nicht so unähnlich zu sein scheint – in der jedoch Alleinunterhaltertum niemals peinlich (neudeutsch: cringe), ist, sondern keine Angst vor weirder Coolness hat.

Die Gegenentwürfe finden sich wie immer nur im Kleinen. Der Traum ist tot, hoch lebe der Traum. Und dieser braucht einfach nur etwas zu erzählen haben, eine eigene Story, die eben gerade nicht aussieht wie ein Instagramfilter. Pat ist ein Album, das mit Sicherheit niemals im Supermarktradio gespielt werden wird – doch schafft es Momente, an die man sich auch nach 3 Storyclips noch erinnert.

Pop culture seems to move cyclical. Now it's the turn of the beloved Eighties again: the Neue Neue Deutsche Welle is making its way into the current mainstream, series and shows celebrate the well-known hits, illustrated with stylized glossy filters – but in the end it's just fashionable itpieces by H&M again. Precisely the upheaval from the 70s to the 80s was formative for all those who sought experimentation, grand gestures and weirdness in pop.

Glamour and Gloom's new album Pat is dedicated to exactly this transitional phase, inspired by the greats: you are reminded of Bowie, Einstürzende Neubauten, but also The Doors. As they already did, the depth of the historical space is built on blues and chanson for example. The songs wander, tell stories, from then and today. Never just thinking of past years, but yet without ever forgetting yesterday, Pat always revels on solid ground.

Glamour and Gloom creates all these moods and fluctuations on a home organ. The noisy wave sound he demands from the old-fashioned instrument doesn’t seem far removed from the present day or nostalgic. His deep voice carries us into a new, distant world which doesn't seem so dissimilar to our own - but in which solo entertainmentship is never cringeworthy, but rather unafraid of weird coolness.

As always counter-designs can only be found on a small level. The dream is dead, long live the dream. And that dream just needs to have something to tell, a story of its own, what doesn't look like an Instagram filter. Pat is an album that certainly will never be played on supermarket radio – but it creates moments you will remember even after 3 story clips.
